Getting Around El Mirage Once the Car Keys Are Put Away

El Mirage runs its own Dial-A-Ride. It gives on-demand, door-to-door rides inside the city's boundary to permanent residents who are 65 or older or living with a disability. The city contracts with AllThrive 365, run by Foundation for Senior Living Programs and once called Northwest Valley Connect. Riders enroll and get approved first. Trips go by Lyft or an AllThrive 365 accessible vehicle, and a wheelchair-accessible ride needs at least seven days' notice.

There's a reason the city runs its own. Starting July 1, 2018, Valley Metro Paratransit stopped operating inside El Mirage unless both ends of a trip sit in the federal ADA service area. That's the part of town bounded by Varney Avenue on the south, Well Street on the north and Main Street on the west. The city lists AllThrive 365 at $2 a one-way trip and Valley Metro Paratransit at $4. It calls AllThrive 365 the usual pick for trips up to seven miles.

A ride gets your loved one to the clinic door. It doesn't get them dressed, fed and out on time, or settled back in afterward. A caregiver can handle that part. When the city ride doesn't fit the trip, our companion care includes rides and errands, and we'll go over how they work when you call.

The El Mirage Senior Center and the Hours Around It

The El Mirage Senior Center, at 14010 N El Mirage Road, is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The city says it serves people 55 and older and adults with disabilities, with group exercise, activities, outings and a daily lunch. The hot lunch is listed at $3 a meal. Orders go in by noon the day before, and lunch arrives at the center at 11 a.m.

The city is also clear that the center isn't an adult daycare, and that people who take part need to manage fairly independently. Someone who needs help in the bathroom, or who gets mixed up away from home, may need more than the center offers.

Home care can cover the rest of the day: the morning shower and breakfast before the center opens, or the afternoon after it closes. Our personal care page covers bathing, dressing and moving safely around the house. If memory loss is part of the picture, our dementia home care page explains how calm routines help.

Rent, Utility and Housing Help in El Mirage

The Community Action Program is a partnership of Maricopa County, El Mirage and Surprise. It offers limited, short-term help with rent, utilities and eviction prevention to residents who qualify. Its El Mirage office is inside the senior center on Tuesday mornings, and funding is limited.

El Mirage Senior Village, on W Thunderbird Road, is income-restricted senior housing owned by the nonprofit Mercy Housing. Its 41 units were finished in 1998 with HUD Section 202 and city funding. They're for seniors at or below 50 percent of area median income. Mercy Housing lists a computer lab, Meals on Wheels, a food bank and help with transportation.

Questions about either program go to the people who run them. In an apartment, our help looks the same: a steady hand in the shower and a hot dinner. Our meals, laundry and housekeeping page covers the household side.

What Home Care in El Mirage Looks Like Week to Week

Here's one way a week could look. On Monday and Wednesday, a morning visit covers a shower, breakfast and a look in the fridge before the Dial-A-Ride pickup. On Saturday, a few hours of company while the family caregiver takes a break, which is what respite care is for.

Summer changes the routine. When it's over 110 degrees, we keep the blinds drawn, water within reach and errands early.

El Mirage sits out in the West Valley, so Meridian Home Care sets schedules here ahead with you and keeps them on the calendar. Every kind of help is on our home care services page. We also come out to Surprise, Sun City and the other towns on our service areas page.

El Mirage Turns 75

El Mirage was incorporated on June 25, 1951, which makes 2026 the city's 75th anniversary year. The city has planned a three-day fiesta and parade for October 22 to 24 at Bill Gentry Park, with the parade on Thunderbird Road. Outings like this are part of companion care. If the person you care for wants to see the parade, a caregiver can bring them along with a folding chair and a cold drink. When they've had enough, the caregiver brings them home.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a caregiver help my loved one get ready for a Dial-A-Ride pickup?

Yes. We can help them dress, eat and get out the door on time, then be there when they get home. Enrollment and eligibility go through the city and AllThrive 365.

My family member goes to the senior center but needs more help now. What are our options?

The center expects people to manage fairly independently. Home care covers what they need help with at home, like showers, meals and medication reminders. They can keep both, the center for company and lunch and a caregiver for the rest of the day.

Do you come to El Mirage on evenings and weekends?

Yes. El Mirage visits are set ahead with you, and they can include evenings, weekends and overnights. Call any hour, any day, to talk it through.
