Getting Around Chandler With Flex, RideChoice and Paratransit

Chandler Flex is an on-demand ride service in southwest Chandler. Riders 65 and older, and riders who use a wheelchair, pay $1 a ride instead of the standard $2. It runs Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and you book by app or by phone. The city shows the Flex zone on a map rather than in words, so check the home address against it.

For people with a disability who can't use regular buses or trains, the city describes ADA paratransit, a door-to-door shared ride that costs $4. Approval takes an application, a release form and an in-person assessment at the Valley Metro Mobility Center in Phoenix. Once someone has paratransit approval, RideChoice lets Chandler residents take up to 20 trips a month with no booking ahead. Those trips cost $3 for the first eight miles, plus $2 for each mile after.

A $1 Flex ride helps on the days a caregiver isn't scheduled. On the days one is, a caregiver can drive, walk your loved one into the appointment and stop at the pharmacy on the way home. Our companion care page covers rides, errands and the conversation that comes with them.

Grab Bars, Ramps and Chandler's Home Modification Grants

The City of Chandler runs housing rehabilitation programs with FSL Home Improvements for low and moderate income homeowners. Home Modifications for People with Disabilities is a grant of up to $10,000. The city lists wheelchair ramps, grab bars, railings, wider doorways, and changes to showers, sinks and toilets. To qualify, you need to live in Chandler, show a year of homeownership, meet HUD income rules and show proof of disability. There's also an Emergency Repair Program grant of up to $10,000 and a forgivable exterior improvement loan of up to $20,000.

A grab bar makes the bathroom safer, but it can't help anyone into the shower. That part is personal care. A caregiver steadies the person on the step in, sets up the shower chair, hands over the towel and helps with dressing after. A ramp gets the wheelchair to the front door, but someone still helps with the move from the car seat to the chair.

Home Care in Chandler After a Hospital Stay

Chandler's hospitals include Dignity Health Chandler Regional Medical Center on West Frye Road, with emergency care, heart, cancer and orthopedic services and a trauma center. Banner Ocotillo Medical Center sits at Alma School Road and the Loop 202, and Banner calls the 124-bed hospital its newest.

In the hospital, help was a call button away. At home, the bathroom is down the hall and the kitchen counter is the only thing to lean on. A caregiver can be there for the first night home, the 2 a.m. trip to the bathroom, meals that match the discharge papers and the ride to the follow-up visit. Doctors and nurses keep the medical side, and we handle the everyday help around it. Our post-hospital care page explains more. If a heart condition or diabetes is part of the picture, chronic condition support covers the longer run.

Weekday Company at the Chandler Senior Center and Tumbleweed

The Chandler Senior Center on East Boston Street is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Seniors can drop in to see friends, join a program or use a computer, and lunch is available Monday through Friday. Membership takes an ID at the front desk. At Tumbleweed Recreation Center on East Germann Road, the Saguaro Social Club sets aside the same weekday hours for people 55 and older, with games and activities.

A standing trip to the center gives someone who's alone most days something to look forward to. A caregiver can help your family member get ready and get there. If another relative does most of the caregiving, the hours at home before and after can be respite care, so they get a real break.

Chandler households average 2.59 people. If yours includes someone who needs care and you work full days, a few weekday visits can cover the long middle of the day. Our home care services page covers each kind of help in detail. We also come out to Sun Lakes, Mesa and every town on our service areas list.
